π Nigeria’s Silent Epidemic: How Drug Abuse Is Stealing the Dreams of Our Youths
Let’s be honest have you noticed how many young Nigerians are quietly slipping into drug addiction? From codeine-laced drinks to tramadol and loud, substance abuse is eating deep into our society, and sadly, it’s happening right before our eyes.
Across campuses, neighborhoods, and even online spaces, drug use is becoming “normal.” Many youths say it helps them “escape reality” but at what cost? Broken homes, failed dreams, mental health struggles, and rising crime rates are just a few of the consequences.
According to recent studies, millions of Nigerian youths between the ages of 15 and 35 have experimented with hard drugs. Behind every number is a story of pain, pressure, or the search for belonging. Some blame unemployment, others point to depression or peer pressure. But no matter the reason, one truth stands out: this epidemic is robbing a generation of its future.
So, here’s the big question: What are we doing about it?
Parents need to talk more. Schools must create awareness. The government must make rehabilitation accessible. And as friends, brothers, and sisters, we must not look away.
Because one voice, one conversation, and one helping hand can save a life.
